Of generous size the caned rectangular back and seat with suede loose cushions on baluster-turned arm supports and fluted tapering legs terminating in lacquered brass caps and casters. One seat rail stamped IB. Known as Ashburnham chairs after a Gillows 1803 design for the Earls of Ashburnham a closely related pair was sold Christies London July 2002 Lot 153 ($127,566). The craftsman IB is known to have worked for Gillows on a commission supplying giltwood settees to the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam’s seat at Wentworth Woodhouse.
