DESCRIPTIONBy one of the nineteenth century's leading cabinet makers, Holland and Sons, this desk is of highly figured burr golden oak, with an excellent quality gilt-tooled black leather inset top above a frieze with three drawers supported on two pedestals, each with three drawers to the front and a cupboard containing the original shelf to the rear. The drawers to the pedestals with a side locking pillar and with Bramah locks throughout, the locks stamped J.T.NEEDS 128 PICCADILLY LATE J. BRAMAH 124 PICCADILLY .The whole supported on plinths with original wood casters. One drawer and both cupboards signed HOLLAND & SONS. Superb color throughout. Together with three keys. Holland & Sons were among the most distinguished cabinet makers of the nineteenth century. Founded in 1803 by William Holland, they became Holland & Sons in 1843 and were granted the Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria for whom they worked on commissions for the royal residences Osborne House, Balmoral, Sandringham and Windsor Castle. Other prominent commissions included the British Museum, a number of London clubs and the new Houses of Parliament, a commission they shared with Gillows. Holland & Sons continued under family control until they ceased trading in 1942 and their archives are preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
