DESCRIPTION

A very fine piece inscribed to back of the figure: Publd. Decr. 2d 1809 by R. Shout, Holborn, London

Robert Shout c. 1760-1835 produced, in partnership with his uncle Benjamin Shout, monumental sculpture and also plaster busts, ornaments and casts after the works of famous sculptors of the day. Perhaps known best for his busts of George Washington and Lord Nelson for the popular market this finely modeled piece is notable for its Chinoiserie subject. The revival of the craze for all things Chinese was spurred by the construction of the Brighton Pavillion between 1787 and 1823 for George, Prince of Wales, later the Prince Regent and King George IV.

This piece is of very high quality with the face naturalistically rendered, possibly indicating a known personage. The scroll held in the right hand is the original bamboo piece and is a very rare survival.

Holborn, London dated 1809 by Robert Shout
