Product Description

A beautifully designed and stylish set of French brass and ebonized fabric scales. These would have been used by a fabric manufacturer or retailer to calculate the quantity of cotton required to produce a certain length of cloth. By hanging one meter of cotton thread on the hook the scale calculates how many meters of cloth can be produced by a 1000 meter reel of cotton. The lighter the cotton the more cloth that can be produced. An interesting and highly decorative item. The piece marked STUTZ & CO, LILLE. Stutz was a maker of precision instruments including cameras in Lille, France during the 19th century, and would have produced items of this nature to service as Lille was the center of the fabric industry.

French c. 1890
