DESCRIPTION

Of “hour-glass” shape and carved from a solid piece of oak incorporating a rounded rim, and drainage channels leading to a central reservoir for spills supported on five swivel-action caskets of which four are original.

An interesting coaster for bottles, decanters or mugs this would have been used for wines or ales and the wear to the top attests to the spillage that occurred and also the remarkable longevity of oak.

A very similar brass bound oak coaster is illustrated in Treen for the Table, by Jonathan Levi, Antique Collectors Club, 1998, page 69 plate 3/45.

An interesting and rather rare artifact that is still useful and would be a talking point in any well-appointed wine cellar.
English, c. 1780
