DESCRIPTIONBookrests, particularly are rather rarer than one may imagine, and when one does find one they tend to be of good quality, as they were likely commissioned by families of considerable means given the cost of fine books in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Of simple elegant design with an adjustable solid face sitting on four flattened round feet, the quality of the timber and construction indicates a fine maker and we can confidently attribute the piece to the eminent firm of Gillows.
